More randomness. When I initially tried to look for a pattern I noticed
interface release failures if I booted with the card inserted as stated
above. If I booted without the card and inserted it after login, I was
able to eject the card and interface would get released.
Several times since then, I've ejected the card hours after inserting.
Sometimes the interface is released and other times it is not. I'm
going to try to narrow it down more if I can. Maybe it has something to
do with the machine going to sleep also.
Below is a snippet from the system log. I think the line of interest is
the final line; "SIOCPROTODETACH_IN6: en1 error=43". I've got no clue
what error 43 is but from the IN6 in the name I think it has to do with
IPv6. I'll need a few days but I'll try everything with IPv6 turned
off.
